coming soon - video tour of mt baldy school
Mt Baldy School is a single-school district located in the village of Mt Baldy. Mt Baldy is part of the San Gabriel Mountain range approximately 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California. The school has a stable enrollment of 105 students, kindergarten through 8th grade. Approximately 60% of our student body attends school with inter-district attendance permits (parents live outside Mt Baldy's attendance boundaries). Some parents transport their children from as far away as 50 miles. Our school has historically scored well on standardized tests, and although we value the information these assessments provide, we believe in multiple measures to assess student learning and progress toward goals.
Recognizing the value of a small student to teacher ratio, our classrooms rarely go over 25 students. Our kindergarten classroom currently has 12 students.
We hold school tours every 3rd Thursday of the month for interested prospective parents and students. We would love for you to come experience what learning is like at Mt Baldy School. Please contact us via email or phone to save a spot for our next tour.
Enrollment/Inter-district transfer process
To enroll your child at Mt Baldy School, please contact us. We have waiting lists in some grades, while other grades have available spaces. In the event there is room for your child(ren) in the grade(s) requested, the process of enrollment is simple. Guardians attain an inter-district transfer from their home district and provide us with a copy. After that, regular student paperwork is filled out and your student officially becomes a Mt Baldy student.
Standards and Curricula
At Mt Baldy School, we recognize that standards-based, developmentally appropriate curriculum, instruction and assessment are vital for a robust program. We believe that the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are an excellent foundation for academic achievement, and we continually strive to make our program accessible for children. The desire for childrens' success lies at the heart of our teaching.
Although the basis for most of our curriculum comes from CCSS, we recognize that important skillsets, understandings and habits of mind are equally as valuable. Some of these include: communicating with clarity, persistence, thinking flexibly, questioning, listening with understanding and empathy, finding humor, and innovating.
We consider the whole child at Mt Baldy School. Our curriculum and instruction take this into consideration, resulting in an approach that benefits the child academically, socially and emotionally. Instruction at Mt Baldy School is centered on the ideas of effectively gathering data through all the senses, as well as fostering a continuous love of learning. Instruction can take many different forms here. Taking advantage of how the brain learns is embedded into the way we teach; therefore a visitor to the school may see students experiencing planting seeds during science (robust neural networks are built through active processing and experiences), listening to a song about the gold rush during social studies (singing can soothe nerves and elevate spirits, putting content in a song helps later recall), taking a hike to observe a silhouette to write a poem (exercise benefits cognition in numerous ways), or reading quietly on the floor during language arts (reading not only helps us process verbal and visual information, it cultivates imagination).
Mt Baldy School has some of the most compassionate, professional and expert teachers in California. Their commitment to the children, each other, and parents and community is as unique as the school itself.
